Have the student point to one of the two pictures on the page after you say it to see if s/he can hear the difference. Model open versus closed word pairs, and have the student copy your words and movements. When you model “moo n,” open for the “moo” part, and clap your hands together for the “n” to shut or close the word. As you say, “moo,” hold your palms together out in front of you (praying gesture), and then open them as you say “moo.” Explain that “moo” is an open word because it doesn’t have a sound on the end to close the word. Ask if the student meant “moon.” At this point, you could model that when you say “moo,” you are talking about an animal sound, but when you say “moon,” you are talking about the round thing in the night sky. The objective of the exercise is to help your student understand that using a closed sound on the end of a word changes what the word means.įor example, if you ask a student, “What do we call that large ball that shines in the night sky?” the student may say “moo” for “moon.” Explain to the student that you heard him/her say “moo,” which is the sound a cow makes.
